Bio

Alessi’s paintings often depict single figures and faces that live and act in a space that is suggested rather than described. they reflect the painter’s interest in the narrative and formal possibilities connected with the representation on the human figure.

Trained traditionally and influenced by the great works of western figurative art (especially portraiture) she uses a personal vocabulary that favors gestural marks and a use of color that is instinctive but rooted in naturalism.

Her subjects are drawn from her everyday visual experiences and from the reworking of personal memories. A family picture, a photograph of a stranger taken in a public space, or a quick sketch can become starting points for a painting. The process varies depending on the technique used. Alessi enjoys using very fast and unforgiving techniques like watercolor or monotype, but she also enjoys the slow stratification and transformation of the image that happens with oil painting on canvas.

Alessi was born in Rome, Italy, where she received her BFA from Accademia di Belle Arti. She had several solo and group shows in Italy. In NY she studied at the Art Students League and at Parsons School of Design. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn.
