Bio

The natural world — the landscape and the myriad creatures that inhabit it — provides Flavia Bacarella with both inspiration and motif. In her recent artwork, subject matter is drawn from travels in Kenya, Botswana and New Zealand. For Bacarella, each of these countries manifests in its own way the infinite richness of life.

In recent years, Bacarella has focused on woodcuts. The physicality of the process draws her to this art form. Carving an image in a block of wood, in her own words, “serves as a distillation of observation and experience and represents a quest to reveal an intimate, sometimes elusive, truth about the subject. It imposes limitations that encourage an essential simplicity and, sometimes, a revealing surprise in the final print.”

Flavia Bacarella studied at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture and earned an MFA in painting from Brooklyn College. She taught art at Lehman College (City University of New York) in the Bronx for 21 years and chaired the Art Department for five of those years.
