BUAnnual Juried Competition-birm

Every year The Prince Street Gallery Annual Juried Competition is open to all applicants working in two-dimensional media. Past jurors have included prominent artists such as Philip Pearlstein, Irving Sandler, Yvonne Jacquette, Robert Berlind, Susanna Coffey, Lois Dodd, Graham Nickson and Stuart Shils. Prince Street Gallery is pleased to present this year’s juried competition:

Prince Street Gallery 10th ANNUAL JURIED COMPETITION

Entry Deadline: March 23, 2018

Exhibition Date: July 10 – 28, 2018

Robert Birmelin, Juror

“Birmelin’s paintings are brilliant in the way they confront us with a variety of urban spaces and surfaces, including human surfaces. His is a toughminded realism–these are not a tourist’s pictures. They flatter no one, and are full of psychological as well as material detail.”
–Donald Kuspit, Artforum

“Robert Birmelin is the magical realist of our mean streets,” wrote art critic Jed Perl in his New Criterion article “New York Stories”.

Robert Birmelin, whose works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, and the Whitney Museum, currently has several paintings in a major international group show: The American Dream – American Realism 1945 – 2017, now at the Drents Museum in the Netherlands. Birmelin is represented by the Luise Ross Gallery in New York, his last solo exhibit there in 2016, and has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards – among them, a National Endowment for the Arts award, a Fulbright, and a Tiffany grant. After receiving his MFA from Yale, Birmelin was a highly respected professor at Queens College of the City University of New York for 24 years.
The artist will give a talk on his work on Friday July 13, at 6 pm.
