As soon as you enter the gallery you’ll be struck by the bold gestures, energy and sinuous lines of Trombly’s work.
His more minimalist black and white collage “Bach’s Invention” draws you into his world inspired by his earlier work as a composer, the art materials he uses and life itself. The large, colorful painting “A Quiet Life” is a visual analog to Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poem “I am living a quiet life” that reminisces about anything but one. A quartet of larger paintings, using only black and red pigments on white canvas, is a set of variations on a theme of sweeping black marks, calligraphic gestures and restrained rectangles.
There are also a number of smaller collages that are more intimate, reflective and perhaps ‘minimalist’. Yet they too draw us in with their decisive and bold mark making.While preparing for this exhibition, Trombly also completed a large commissioned painting for the public space in the new Gallery 64 building in Washington, D.C.
Classical music devotees know Preston as the long-time host of Sirius/XM Satellite Radio’s nationally broadcast “Symphony Hall” channel 76.
