Prince Street Gallery presents 45-50 works by Wendy Shalen in her Portraits of Nature, Then & Now exhibition. Wendy Shalen has been an Instructor of Drawing, Painting and Portfolio Development at the Art Students League of New York since 2005. She also teaches landscape drawing and painting workshops as well as art historical drawing workshops at the Met Museum sponsored by the Art Students League.
For over twenty years, Wendy Shalen has created a body of work entitled Portraits of Nature through her drawings, paintings, and handmade paper. Walking her Airedales through the forests surrounding her home has offered her great inspiration and a collection of natural objects to draw. Using a variety of media such as silver and gold point, graphite and colored pencils, watercolor and pastel, and lithography, Shalen observes the details of small skeletal branches, tree knots, curled leaves, birch bark, and oak forest finds.
Portraits of Nature, Then & Now includes selections from her earlier Trash Series, graphite drawings, lithographic prints and watercolors focused particularly on the damage we have done to our environment through neglect and thoughtlessness. Shalen continues in this series to shed light on the intricate beauty of the natural world, capturing the anthropomorphic qualities inherent in detailed studies of nature. Alongside her environmental work and detailed studies of nature are some of the actual artifacts that have inspired her, together with a number of pastel and small oil plein air studies painted from Martha’s Vineyard’s beautiful shores, which provide a contrasting sense of hope, calm and quiet reflection.
