Yookan Westfield, Peaceful Day

The Prince Street Gallery is pleased to present the work of Yookan Westfield
in an exhibition titled Peaceful Day.

Yookan Westfield was born in Nanao-City, on the Noto Peninsula in Japan (the
site of the January 1st, 2024 earthquake). She earned a BFA from Kanazawa Art
University and an MFA from Musashino Art University in Tokyo. In 1997 and 1998,
she received the Dokuritsu Prize at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Japan.
Westfield came to the United States in 2002. Though she had already completed
her graduate studies in art, in 2007 she spent a year at the New York Studio
School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. Presently Westfield lives and works in
Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Peaceful Day presents paintings focusing on the changing light and color in
views both inside and outside Westfield’s windows. The sky, as reflected in the
work, can feel hopeful in the morning light, then more melancholy as the day
draws to a close, and finally, changing into the quiet of night. Gracing these lovely
paintings are portraits of her two cats, Orange and Grey, as they lounge about in
the interior space. In these observations of the changing light, Westfield creates a
shifting but tranquil realm in which to feature her feline companions.
